What's New at the Green Expo?

In addition to the Trade Show, Workshops, Exhibits & Demos, Kids’ Expo + Art, Music & Food that are always a part of the GreenExpo, we will feature several exciting new attractions for 2010.

These include:

 Wendell Berry headlines Panel Discussion on KY’s Energy Future!

 On Saturday, October 30th at 10:30 AM, the GreenExpo will host a panel discussion on “How do we move forward responsibly with coal in our energy portfolio?”  Panelists will be Wendell Berry (author, poet), Bill Bissett (Kentucky Coal Association), Jason Delambre (Interdependent Energies) and Jeff Hohman (Eastern Kentucky Power Coop). Panelists will have up to 10 minutes to address the main question, followed by a Q & A session. Questions will include some prepared in advance and others submitted in writing by the audience.

 

- Panel Participants (Bios provided by participants):

·         Wendell Berry: Wendell Berry is a Kentucky farmer and writer who has been opposed to the damages of surface mining since 1965. 

 

·         Bill Bissett: On February 3, 2010, Bill Bissett was named the President of the Kentucky Coal Association. Bissett was previously employed as the Chief of Staff/Senior Vice President for Communications of Marshall University, located in Huntington, West Virginia.  Prior to working for his Alma Mater, Bissett served as Vice President of Public Relations for the integrated marketing firm Charles Ryan Associates (CRA).  During his tenure at CRA, he was instrumental in the establishment of the Friends of Coal campaign. Prior to his work at CRA, Bissett served as Director of Communications for both the West Virginia Department of Agriculture and the West Virginia Department of Transportation.  He has also worked in television marketing and advertising and was a columnist for The Charleston Gazette.  Bissett earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Marshall University, in addition to receiving his commission in the United States Army. He is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Leadership Studies.

 

·         Jason Delambre: Jason Delambre is a Certified Energy Manager (CEM) who works with clients to maximize profitability through effective utilization of natural resources and the development of ground-breaking energy efficiency solutions.  Throughout his career, Jason has developed an extensive knowledge of architecture, construction, urban planning, energy, and university sustainability strategies. His undergraduate education was in Architecture and History, and he holds a Master’s Degree in Environmental Planning from the University of Cincinnati. During his career, Jason has developed a unique vision of the economic and energy efficiency synergies possible through innovative business, infrastructural, financial, policy, and community organizing strategies.

 

·         Jeff Hohman: 1979-present - Employed with East Kentucky Power Cooperative, 2003-2008 - Manager of Marketing and Natural Resources, 2008-present – Manager of Member Services, 1973–1977 - Murray State University - B.S., Biology, emphasis in aquatics, Honors:  1994-1995 – Served as industry representative to the Kentucky Biodiversity Task Force, 1995-1996 – Served as Chairman of the Kentucky Biodiversity Council, 1997 – Named Kentucky Naturalist of the Year, 1997 – Named Kentucky Nature Conservancy Volunteer or the Year, 1997 – Received the Kentucky Nature Preserves Commission Biodiversity Award, 2000 – Received the Garden Club of Kentucky State Enrichment Award, 2002 – Kentucky Academy of Science – Industrial Scientist of the Year, 2003 – Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife – Wildlife Stewardship Award.

 

·         Tom Martin – Moderator: Tom Martin was born in Mt. Sterling and grew up in Morehead where he attended Morehead State University.  Now editor in chief of Business Lexington, Tom was a member of the founding 1974 staff of the Associated Press Radio Network in Washington, D.C. where he won a Peabody Award for best radio documentary.  In the early 80’s, Tom went on to serve as a news anchor with RKO Radio Network News. From 1990-95, he anchored newscasts for the ABC Radio Network News; WABC News; and Paul Harvey News in New York.  Upon returning to Kentucky in ‘95, Tom created the “World’s First Rhythm and News Show” format for Lexington’s WVLK.  In 1997, he was a founder, program director and program host for Georgetown College Public Radio’s WRVG.  Tom has served as Director of Communications for the House Majority Leadership in Frankfort.  A resident of Lexington, he is president of the board of the Lexington Music Institute, a founder and Vice President of the Lexington Area Music Alliance, a board member of the Lexington Forum and past-chair of the Downtown Entertainment Development Task Force, organized by Vice Mayor Jim Gray.  Tom was the recipient of the 2007 John McGill Journalism Award presented by the Kentucky League of Cities and the NewCities Institute.  Tom is a co-founder of the local band, The City, formed with other members of the Lexington business and professional communities to perform in support of non-profit arts organizations.  Tom is married to Sheila Kenny, Director of Marketing for the Lexington Center Corporation. He is the father of six.

  

GreenExpo Powered by Renewable Energy!  

Advanced Energy Solutions will bring their new 20 foot solar demonstration trailer, which will power the music stage, workshop spaces, and as many other exhibits as possible in the back of the exhibit hall. KY Solar Partnership and Bluegrass WindPower will provide solar and wind power from the West Main Street parking lot to the Kid’s Expo and the front of the exhibit hall. 

 

GreenExpo Goes Carbon Neutral!

The 2010 GreenExpo will offset its carbon footprint by Investing in the new Appalachian Carbon Partnership program initiated by the Mountain Association for Community Economic Development (MACED).  The investment goes directly toward the preservation of KY forestland managed according to American Tree Farm System guidelines. These forests help clean our air, provide sustainable sources of high quality timber and preserve natural wildlife habitat.  Anyone may participate! Kid’s Expo: EcoArts, Expansion + Halloween Fun!

Bluegrass Greenworks was awarded an EcoArt Grant by the LFUCG Dept. of Environmental Quality, which will help fund Videography & Songwriting Workshops for kids in the 12 to 18 range, plus EcoArt Activity Tables connecting creative, hands-on activities with lessons related to local environmental issues. Bluegrass PRIDE will also be bringing school groups and their environmental projects to the GreenExpo. Kids can “Green Their Halloween” with The Great Pumpkin Patch, a Daily Costume Parade … and, of course … HALLOWEEN TREATS! Kids may also participate in “Reverse Trick-or-Treat” where they give fair-trade chocolates to homes as they trick-or-treat. The chocolates are attached to cards that educate homeowners about the concept of fair-trade and how they can support it.
